Jesus or My Girlfriend
Last weeks installment of Jesus or my Girlfriend was a (supposedly) Jesus song.
I liked the one comment from ThirstyDavid who asked, “but why do I feel like I've been eavesdropping where I shouldn't?”
This weeks song has a twist. It is in the regular rotation in at least 2 churches I know of. Does anyone recognize it?
I needed the shelter of someone's arms, and there you were
I needed someone to understand my ups and downs,
and there you were with sweet love and devotion
Deeply touching my emotion
I want to stop and thank you Jesus
I want to stop and thank you Jesus
How sweet it is to be loved by you
How sweet it is to be loved by you
I close my eyes at night
Wondering where would i be without you in my life
Everything i did was just a bore
Everywhere i went it seems i'd been there before
But you brighten up for me all of my days
With a love so sweet in so many ways
I want to stop and thank you Jesus
I just want to stop and thank you Jesus
How sweet it is to be loved by you
How sweet it is to be loved by you
You were better to me than i was to myself
For me, there's you and there ain't nobody else
I want to stop and thank you Jesus
I just want to stop and thank you Jesus
How sweet it is to be loved by you
How sweet it is to be loved by you
Interestingly enough this is a better song that last week's.

10 Spoke Up:
You've got to be kidding.
Sweet Baby James! Do they have to pay royalties for that? They ought to pay some fine - that's for sure!
I've seen JT in concert...somehow I don't remember the lyrics quite like this.
Wasn't the song written about Carly Simon? Original intent means nothing to these people. Even secular things are "up for grabs."
"That which is born of flesh is flesh..."
Is it cheating to google it like it is cheating to google the mystery quote over at the Pyroman site?
Oh, too late! Curiosity has uber-whelmed me. Wow. Sensitive folk stylings w/ some poetically Jesus-o-centric add-ons. "Be thou my girlfriend..."
I pride myself on being cynical... yet even that song made me angry.
That's a great hymn.
Christ as commodity
If they pay royalties, it won't be to James Taylor. He didn't write it. It's an old Motown song he covered.
My wife's parents attend a church that has played songs like "Spirit in the Sky" as congregational "worship" and Garth Brooks' "Unanswered Prayers" for special music. Sickening. Scott, what biblical defense can you give against this?
