Off The Fence On Offense
Much has been said recently about stumbling or offending the “weaker brother”. Most have been focused on the stumbling, which I believe is clear in Scripture (referred to in previous posts/comments). Careless exploitation of Christian liberty can be damaging, and discretion is evidence of a fruit of the Spirit (self-control).
The point of this post however, is to focus on being offended. These days, the charge of being offended by someone’s statement or even a simple opinion has given the A.C.L.U their own parking space at the 9th circuit court. Crying foul has somehow become a Constitutional right, and the squeaky-wheel is quickly oiled with law-changing apologies.
But what about the Christian? What about those of us who have been instructed to live a life of sacrifice and humility; not caught up in the cares of this world. Is there a place for the Christian to be offended?
Here’s the problem, at the root of this is a predetermined standard by which you measure how you think you ought to be treated. If anyone sells you short, you take offense. What's worse is that this standard is everchanging, largely influenced by circumstance, even what mood you're in. This standard is completely self-written. What offends one may not offend another. What if my mom actually did wear combat boots? Where in Scripture (whether explicit or implicit) are we offered the authority to write such a list?
Try this list-
Matt 5:44 - …”pray for those who persecute you.”
Matt 10:25 – “If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they malign those of his household” (a warning, not a question).
Matt 20:10-12,15 – “Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ To which the master replied, ‘Am I not allowed to do what I please with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’”
1 Thess 2:2 “But though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God…”
Now I didn’t consult the Greek on these, so let me know if I’ve abused these verses. Otherwise, sit down and give them their due authority. Brother and sister, there’s no room for self indulgence in the life of a disciple. To take offense is to exalt yourself higher than you ought...and this is sin. No apologies.
If this offends you, keep this in mind, the offense is not even yours to take.

10 Spoke Up:
I beleive the astrological thing happens automatically when you put in your birthdate. The only way I know of to not get it is to not put in certain date related info.
You seem like a careful guy, good at research... you may have checked that out before lobbing in the grenades.
As to the bubble bath thing... hey wait, are you PRETENDING to be offended to make the point that you agree with this post?
I'm all confused now... never mind.
There is nothing worse than friendly fire. But Tony rightly points out that as servants of Christ we have no right to take offense ...But we shall keep an eye over our shoulder from now on.
Tony, I believe that you hit the theological nail on the head. In our day of "over-sensitivity" and "tolerance" the key issue for all of us is the fact that we are bondservants to our Lord. Our identity is in Him. To be offended would be a sin. In fact, Jesus said, "Blessed are those who are not offended in Him."
By the way, I thought the "Sleepless in Seattle" in your profile was hurting the cause of Christ much worse than the default-generated astro. signs.
Offended? Yes I am!! By you putting your birthdate into Blogger? Absolutely not. But by saying one of your favorite books is "Your Best Life Now" - sheesh!! Now I'm offended :) Well, wait, what did you say in your post - lemme read that once more. Oh, sorry. I'm over it.
Tony you should be ashamed. Posting such a great blog then having it overshadowed by a few default astrological signs and jokes in the profile. I say we put you in the doghouse for a few days. Oh sorry, I just talked to Barbara and she said you are already there.
Capranica, while you are here, can you pull Bert's knife out of my back. The potruding handle may hurt my testimony, besides wrinkling my good ol' boy clothes.
Bert, sorry I missed your original point. I thought your were serious until I read your comment a couple of more times. You did a great job giving us an example of Tony's post on your comment. It took me a minute to realize that is what you were doing. Sometimes the point gets lost in translation. At least I hope that is what you were doing.
Gee Bert, I thought the photo on my profile would have provided a little insight... oh well.
Hey Tony, Your verse on Matthew 5:44 is exactly what my conviction has been regarding the blog the past 24 hours, so I will share the wealth. "Pray for those who persecute you." Including the Rev. Renee Miller from a previous blog and the Emergent Fellows so lost on their way. In my readings in Luke today, Jesus was teaching the tax collectors and the sinners, as well as the Pharisees and the teachers that had gathered, the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son...Jesus cares about the lost no matter what stage of life and lostness they find themselves in. We should be pointing out their heresies, as well as praying for them. So I prayed for this lost "Rev." named Renee. She needs the Truth to set her free. And I thought of all the members of these emergent churches who are following the lost, we need to pray for them. We need to be petitioning God to bring the teachers and the preachers of these E.C.s to the Truth before it is too late for them. "Every knee will bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord." So all you righteous men and women out there in blogland need to be praying for these people, for as James says, "your prayer is powerful and effective." Are you convicted? I was!
Wow...Fide-O, you gotta' stop with the juicy topics! Your blog is hogging all the reading time I've devoted to other noteworthy blogs. It's a good thing PyroManiac is absent right now...hmmmmm...Where's Pyro?
When I first started my blog I noticed that the astro-signs were automatically loaded when you include your birth date. Right away I decided to remove my birth date because I didn't want to have the astro-signs associated (in a positive way) with my profile. My step-mother is all into that stuff (seriously). I guess I looked at it as a potentially "misinterpreted" endorsement for all that new-age-ish stuff. So, nobody gets to find out that I'm a Sagittarius with blue eyes. OOPS!
With that said...based on my decision to remove my birth date...which of the following do I qualify as:
1. A Stronger Brother?
2. A Weaker Brother?
3. An Offended Brother?
4. A Defended Brother?
5. A Legalistic Brother?
6. A Mormon Brother?
7. A J-Dub Brother?
8. A Phiggety-Phat Brotha'?
9. A Convicted Brother...but a Brother nonetheless?
